Benefits and Challenges of
Contractors' Use of Owners' PMIS
INTRODUCTION: USE OF A PROJECT
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (PMIS)
Use of a Project Management Information System
Level of use by owners and contractors
About half of the owners and contractors who participated in the
study use a PMIS.
■
Almost half of those with a PMIS use it on all of their
projects, and most of the rest use it on half or more of
projects.
■
Most (81%) large owners (capital budget of $100M or more)
use a PMIS, but use is less common among owners with
smaller capital budgets (37%).
■
Similarly, large contractors (annual revenues of $100M or
more) commonly use a PMIS (71%), and small companies
(less than $10M in revenues) infrequently do so (26%).
■
A higher percentage of contractors doing vertical
construction (61%) use a PMIS compared with those doing
horizontal construction (infrastructure projects) (34%).
The top reason that owners and contractors do not use a
PMIS is the belief that their current methods are sufficient
(37% and 29%, respectively). A relatively high percentage of
contractors not using a PMIS also consider it too expensive
(26%) or too complicated (23%). However, 83% of these owners
and contractors have some interest in using a PMIS in the
future, especially contractors, with over half (58%) expressing
a moderate or higher interest in using one in the next three years.
